What to do when you feel down

We can all have days where we feel a bit sorry for ourselves and I’m here to tell you that’s ok! Sometimes we need to nurture ourselves and when these low vibe emotions surface, it’s your mind's way of catching your attention and letting you know you have an emotion that needs to be processed and released. Emotions are forms of energy and energy can easily be shifted if we know how to do it.

In order to shift out of that low vibrational energy and back into the higher vibrational energy that feels much more pleasant, there’s a variety of things we can do without wallowing. So put the ice-cream back in the freezer and have a look at the suggestions below that offer you a much more fruitful alternative.

Medidate

Meditation is a great way to reconnect with ourselves. Meditation can help to relieve any angst you’re experiencing and gives you an opportunity to release any negative emotions that are holding you in a lower vibration. Alongside reconnecting with yourself, meditation is a great way to get closer to your spirit guides and angels and enables them to ‘drop’ the guidance in that you’re seeking - it’s not uncommon to come away from meditation with a feeling of peace and clarity. If you’re new to meditation, there are a host of guided meditations available online that you can use. Find a quiet spot at home or take yourself into nature if the weather allows for it.

Journal

When we journal, it gives us an opportunity to get all of our emotions and thoughts out of our head and onto paper and helps us make sense of it all. You don’t have to be a gifted writer to journal, sometimes my own journal entries are ‘brain dumps’. When you journal regularly, you will likely have your old entries that can provide clarity and moments of learning even years after the entry has been created. I used to keep a paper journal but these days, I much prefer an electronic version. There are some great journaling apps and tools that are available or you can use a word processing tool or a notebook or paper journal if you prefer handwritten.

Put some music on

Music is food for the soul and it has the power to shape your mood. Having love songs on can trigger your tears but having some upbeat music on can trigger you to want to shake those hips and smile, and that’s always a welcome feeling! It's a great way to shift that negative energy that’s sitting inside us and it can leave us feeling great. If you’re looking to lift your spirits, stick something upbeat on that you can really dance to. Dance has been used by our ancestors for centuries in a spiritual way so get those feet moving!

Enjoy a herbal tea

For those of you who aren’t experts in herbal medicine (I’m certainly not), organic herbal teas are a great way to get the benefits of herbal medicine without the knowhow. Enjoying a lovely cuppa is a great way to ingest some beneficial herbs and reap the benefits they have on your mind and body.

Yoga

Doing some gentle yoga is great for our mind and body. Yoga helps us connect with ourselves and helps to shift some of that stale energy in our bodies. If you’re new to yoga, it’s definitely worth learning the correct technique to ensure you get the most out of it. If you’re unable to find a local class that you can attend, there are lots of great online classes and tutorials you can find.

Take a walk

It doesn’t have to be anything too strenuous if you’re not feeling up to it, even a gentle stroll will help get your body moving and will help to shift some of that energy. You might even think that during that walk, you’re able to get some clarity on those thoughts of yours or those emotions you’re experiencing.

Read a book

I am one of those people that tends to get lost in a great novel - I usually go for crime novels but I can occasionally be tempted by a beach romance. It’s escapism at its finest! When I’m looking to check in with myself however, I do reach for something that focuses more on self care and healing. Regardless of what you reach for, enjoying a book is a great mood booster and can turn that frown upside down in no time at all.

Focus on a hobby

Whether it’s writing, painting or balloon making - focusing on something that gives you joy is a great way to boost your mood and give yourself some time alone. Your mind will automatically shift when you’re doing something that you find pleasure in.

What has worked best for you? I’d love to hear it! Your guiding light, Gemma x
